" I have finally found the cure for cabin fever with 'alpine skiing' and 'Jeanette
Hamer's Women’s Ski Escape'. I've known Jeanette for a few years now.
In August 2004 I finally decided to take her up on her offer to teach me to ski and I committed to her 2005 Rocky Mountain Ski Escape. December was my first time on skis and two months later I was skiing down the great Canadian Rockies. What a blast! I owe many thanks to Jeanette. She's a great instructor that teaches safe, controlled skiing with confidence. Jeanette also organizes a great trip with loads of laughs and fun on and off the slopes with a great group of women."
That is a good question. As an instructor who majors in teaching the beginner, novice and intermediate female skiers, who desperately want to improve their skills, I am seeing the same problems and the same picture most of the time. Sitting back, bent at the waist, knock-knees, and the famous hip swings, are some of the issues women face. Does this sound like you?
So many women just do not seem to get off the easier runs, even after years of lessons and practice, while the men and the kids master the black diamonds in no time at all.
In 1994, I met
Jeannie Thoren
who is from the US. A local ski shop invited her up to my home ski resort in Thunder Bay, Ontario, to conduct her specialized ski clinics for women. I was totally impressed and excited. Finally here was a woman with solutions for the problems women face in skiing, and doing something about it. Since then, with the encouragement and guidance from Jeannie, I have conducted my own clinics for women here in Canada. They have been totally successful, instead of women dropping out; they have become better skiers and excited about the sport.
My clinics start out with an informative and humorous presentation, showing the biomechanical differences between men and women. Adjusting your boot fit with heel lifts and foot beds, trying out different binding locations on demo skis and trying several exercises while skiing, before and after the adjustments, are what you will experience during the clinic. In the past few years there has been a huge improvement in the way the ski manufactures are designing women specific skis and boots. However there are still adjustments in most cases that still need to be made, as it is impossible to custom fit everyone.
I am on a mission, letting women know how important it is to have their ski equipment fit properly, how to buy with confidence, and how to take care of their investment. My other goal is to conquer the mental issues; lack of confidence, fear, and not giving themselves enough credit, as most women do ski better then they think. I teach my survival tactics, like getting up gracefully, how to get down that “wrong run”, and keeping the smile! I have seen amazing results, and have had so much fun spending my winters on the slopes helping women to become better and happier skiers. Skiing is investing in you health, and it is never too late to try.
